The Classic line includes the A-Series, D-Series, and ND-Series cylindrical locks you’ll find in most Katy homes built 2015-2022, plus the AL-Series levers common in newer Cinco Ranch townhomes. Primus XP and Primus XP High Security cylinders add a sidebar mechanism that prevents standard key duplication, and these require factory-authorized pinning.

To identify your cylinder, remove the key and check the bow stamp. “SC1” or “SC4” indicates Classic; “Primus” or “XP” with a two-level key profile indicates high-security. Measure the cylinder length: 1-1/8″ is standard for 1-3/8″ doors, 1-3/8″ for 1-3/4″ commercial doors. The critical gotcha: Primus cylinders will not retrofit into standard Classic housings without changing the entire lock body. Signs Your Schlage Master Key Systems Is Failing

• Sub-key opens the wrong door. This means a pin has sheared or a master wafer has shifted, creating an unintended shear line. In Katy’s humidity cycles, brass wafers can corrode enough to bind at the wrong height.
• Master key sticks or requires jiggling in multiple cylinders. Wear on the master pin stack has created uneven shear lines across the system. The key still works, but each insertion grinds the pins further out of spec.
• Key extraction pulls the plug follower. The cylinder tailpiece or cam has loosened, usually from over-torquing during rekeying. This is a shop repair; continuing to use the cylinder risks dumping the bottom pins into the lock body.
• New key cuts match the chart but won’t operate the lock. The keying software or manual bitting specification has drifted from the physical pinning, often after a non-dealer rekey. We see this in inherited master key systems where the previous locksmith didn’t update the chart.
• Cylinder turns 360 degrees without retracting the latch. The tailpiece has broken or the cam screw has backed out. In Schlage ND-Series locks, this often means the entire cylinder needs replacement because the cam is staked to the housing.
