• Key catches or sticks in the ignition cylinder. The dimple tracks on a Mul-T-Lock key are precision-milled to lift both pin tumblers and the sidebar simultaneously. Wear rounds these edges, and the key begins to hang on the Alpha spring in MT5+ systems or the telescopic pin in Interactive+. We measure track depth with a profile gauge; anything below 1.2 mm on the primary track means replacement, not duplication.
• Key turns but does not start the vehicle. In Mul-T-Lock automotive applications with transponder integration, the key blade may operate the mechanical cylinder while the embedded chip fails to handshake with the immobilizer. The cut is fine; the electronics are not. We test transponder signal before cutting a new blade.
• Visible cracking or splitting at the key bow. The plastic head on Mul-T-Lock automotive keys contains the transponder coil and often a remote circuit. DIY or Call Us?

There is no dangerous component in key cutting itself, but there is a costly one: a miscut Mul-T-Lock blank is scrap. The dimple angles and sidebar code must match simultaneously; an error of 0.1 mm in either dimension produces a key that enters the lock but won’t operate it. Generic key machines at hardware stores lack the Mul-T-Lock angle guides and cannot cut the sidebar track at all.

What you can safely check: the series code on your key bow, whether your vehicle has an immobilizer light that flashes when the key is removed (indicating transponder presence), and whether you have a key code card from original purchase. What goes wrong with DIY: online “blank matching” services that ship uncut keys, clone programming tools that brick the immobilizer on certain Asian and European makes, and the common assumption that any dimple key machine will do.
