Medeco deadbolts fall into several series, and matching the right one matters for both security grade and door prep. The Maxum 11* series is the most common residential line we see in Katy homes built after 2015, particularly in communities like Cane Island and Elyson. These use a 1-inch hardened steel bolt and a 1-3/8 inch diameter faceplate. The older Medeco 11R series, still found in homes from the early 2000s, has a slightly different tailpiece geometry that will not accept current Maxum cylinders without adapter hardware.

We also install the Medeco X4 deadbolt, which uses a conventional pin-tumbler format rather than the angled-cut high-security keys. The X4 is priced lower but does not offer the same pick resistance. For commercial applications in Katy office parks, the Medeco M3 and Biaxial series remain available, though lead times on restricted-keyway cylinders can run 10-14 days.

To identify your series: remove the interior thumb turn and check the back of the cylinder for a stamped model number, or photograph the key bow shape. The Maxum uses a rounded triangular bow; the X4 uses a more conventional rounded rectangle. Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• Key catches or sticks at mid-rotation. This usually indicates wear in the sidebar slots of the Medeco cylinder, where the angled cuts no longer align cleanly with the locking bar. Houston’s humidity accelerates this by encouraging corrosion in the brass plug.
• Thumb turn rotates but bolt does not retract. The tailpiece connecting the interior assembly to the bolt mechanism has either stripped or worked loose. In Maxum units, this is often a zinc die-cast tailpiece that fatigues after 8-12 years of daily use.
• Bolt extends only partially into the strike plate. Door frame settlement is common in Katy’s clay soils, shifting the strike alignment. The deadbolt itself may be fine, but the security gap has opened to where the bolt no longer seats fully.
• Loose cylinder rotates in the door. The cylinder mounting screws have backed out, or the door face has compressed around the housing. This is more common in fiberglass doors than steel or solid wood.
• Key works in one direction only. The cam at the rear of the cylinder has cracked or the plug retaining pin has sheared. This is a full cylinder replacement; partial disassembly risks dropping the sidebar springs into the door cavity.

What goes wrong with DIY Medeco work: the sidebar springs under the cylinder face are under light tension and will launch if the plug is pulled without a follower tool. The tailpiece orientation matters; reversed, the thumb turn will appear to work but will not actually retract the bolt.
