Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco master key systems center on the cylinder, not the lock body. We work with Medeco Biaxial, Medeco M3, and Medeco X4 series cylinders - the three lines you’re most likely to find in Katy homes and small commercial buildings installed between 2005 and 2020. Biaxial cylinders have a date code stamped on the plug face; M3 and X4 carry a small laser-marked series identifier near the keyway. The keyway profile itself is the critical match: a Biaxial key will not enter an M3 cylinder, and forcing it damages both key and sidebar.

For master keying, the cylinder must be factory-original or a Medeco-authorized pin kit. Aftermarket cylinders marketed as “Medeco-compatible” without Medeco’s restricted keyway program will not integrate into a true master key hierarchy. We’ve replaced three such cylinders in Katy this year alone - two in Cinco Ranch subdivisions where a previous installer substituted generic high-security cylinders to cut cost. Signs Your Medeco Master Key System Is Failing

• Master key works intermittently. The master pin stack has worn unevenly, or a master wafer has developed a burr that catches in certain shear line positions. In Katy’s humidity cycles, brass pins can develop surface oxidation that exaggerates this.
• Change key operates locks outside its group. A master pin has sheared or dropped below its proper chamber depth, creating an unintended shear line. This is a security failure, not just a convenience problem.

• Cylinder rotates but bolt doesn’t retract. This is often misdiagnosed as a lock body problem. In Medeco master systems, the cam tailpiece has a specific orientation for master-keyed applications; if it was reassembled 180 degrees off during a previous service, the master key position won’t transfer motion to the bolt.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no physical danger in disassembling a Medeco cylinder - no springs under tension, no electrical hazard. The risk is knowledge-based. Medeco master pinning uses a two-dimensional sidebar system with rotating pins; the shear line geometry isn’t visible to the naked eye in the way standard Schlage or Kwikset pinning is. An owner with a pinning kit and patience can rekey a single cylinder successfully. Where it goes wrong is master key math: calculating which master pins create independent shear lines without ghost keys that open unintended locks. We’ve been called to Katy homes where a well-intentioned owner created a key that opened every door in the house, including the home office they were trying to isolate.
