If your key has “SC1” or “SC4” stamped near the bow, that’s a residential cylinder code, not automotive. True Schlage automotive blanks carry “SCH-AUTO” or Sidewinder part numbers like 35-100 or 35-101, and the bow shape is wider with a rubber overmold for grip.

Signs Your Schlage Car Key Cutting Is Failing

• The key turns but the engine doesn’t crank. This usually means the transponder chip inside the key head has lost synchronization with the immobilizer module. DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check: whether the spare key works, whether the battery in the fob is fresh, and whether there’s visible damage to the blade. What you cannot safely do: attempt to program a transponder key with online “hack” procedures that brick the immobilizer module, or use a hardware store key machine on a sidewinder blank. Those machines lack the Z-axis milling capability, and a mis-cut blank at $45 is cheaper than a tow to the dealer for immobilizer recovery.
